Smart Data Forum’s activities will be continued in the project Forum Digital Technologies. It has a larger scope aiming to support stakeholders not just in Smart Data but also in major digital technology fields such as AI, Security & Trust and IoT. The project will be managed by the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence in Berlin in cooperation with Fraunhofer HHI and VDI/VDE-IT. The opening event on September 19, featuring State Secretary, will take place at the project’s showroom in Berlin.   >> more

Innovation to Challenges: Smart Data Innovation Challenge (SDI-C) Call

Smart Data Innovation Lab (SDIL) invites AI researchers to submit proposals for an open call under SDI-C program. Six AI micro projects will be funded for a maximum of six man-months, starting in October 2019. In addition, they will have access to infrastructure of the SDIL platform. Four projects with a reference to high-frequency data streams and time series and two thematically open AI-micro projects with pilot character will be funded. The projects are encouraged to include companies as associated partners and data providers who benefit from the results. Applications are open under office@sdil.de until September 21, 2019.   >> more

5th Summer School on Big Data and Machine Learning was a success

From August 17 to 23, 2019 the two Germany based Big Data Competence Centers ScaDS Dresden/Leipzig and BBDC held the 5th international summer school on Big Data and Machine Learning in Dresden. The highly recognized program included key notes from IBM, NVIDIA, Intel, and speakers from academia of both competence centers BBDC and ScaDS Dresden/Leipzig as well as invited speakers. Almost sixty participants learned about topics like uncertainty quantification, distributed machine learning and architectural optimization for deep learning and connected with experts from the field.   >> more

Joint TU Berlin & DFKI team awarded 1st place in the BTW 2019 Data Science Challenge

Researchers from TU Berlin’s Database Systems and Information Management (DIMA) Group and Big Data Management (BigDaMa) Group as well as DFKI’s Intelligent Analytics for Massive Data (IAM) Group were awarded first place in the BTW 2019 Data Science Challenge. The joint team was comprised of Mahdi Esmailoghli, Sergey Redyuk, Ricardo Martinez, Ariane Ziehn, Prof. Ziawasch Abedjan, Prof. Tilmann Rabl, and Prof. Volker Markl. Their submission was titled “[An] Explanation of Air Pollution Using External Data Sources”. The objective of the challenge was to analyze fine particle emission data collected by volunteers who participate in a Citizen Science project.   >> more

On March 22, 2019 Berlin Big Data Center organized a workshop on „Distributed and Stream Data Processing and Machine Learning“ at Smart Data Forum in Berlin. Over 70 participants came to hear four insightful presentations by international high-level experts such as Prof. Volker Markl, Prof. Albert Bifet, Prof. Almar El Abbadi, Prof. Seif Harifi and Paris Carbone. Presentation topics included cloud computing, stream processing, Machine Learning in Data Streams as well as deep analytics and were followed by further discussions.   >> more

German-Swedish exchange on AI

On the June 24 and 25, 2019, Smart Data Forum organized a delegation trip to Stockholm under the theme "Scaling AI in Europe – Architectures and Governance of Future AI Platforms". The exchange was embedded in the German-Swedish Partnership for Innovation and aimed at finding possibilities for cooperation, discussing the development of a data analytics infrastructure as well as to get to know the Swedish AI ecosystem. The Swedish partners were the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm (KTH) as well as the research institute RISE SICS.

New IBM platform extension for SDIL

IBM Power System Accelerated Computer Server (AC922) features the latest Power9 processor technology to provide the power needed for modern high-performance computing (HPC), analysis and AI workloads and enables data-intensive operational loading for corporate AI. It is the only server capable of providing the process speed of data transactions between CPUs and GPUs (I / O performance) to this extent. With this ability SDIL and TECO will use AC922 for HPC, Deep Learning, elaborate text analysis, multilingual speech recognition and direct textual language translation of audio signals.  >> more
