The
Berlin Big Data Center (BBDC), part of the Technische Universität
Berlin (TUB), signed a three-year pact with the Qatar Computing Research
Institute (QCRI), part of Hamad Bin Khalifa University, to promote
international computing research. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)
between QCRI and the BBDC will promote collaboration via the exchange of
research, academic materials, faculty and research scholars. Under this
new agreement, BBDC and QCRI will conduct joint meetings for both
education and research as well as establish new research projects. The
event took place as part of the Smart Data Forum roadshow to Qatar. >> more

Martin
Kiefer, a PhD student in Prof. Volker Markl’s research group has been
awarded 2017 Software Campus grant. The aim of this research project is
to implement an approximate stream processing engine using modern
hardware in an optimal, performant, and energy saving manner. Software
Campus is a BMBF funded development program for outstanding doctoral
students, who are interested in taking up executive management functions

From
June 30th to July 6th 2018 the two Germany-based Big Data Competence
Centers ScaDS Dresden/Leipzig and BBDC are organizing the fourth
international Big Data summer school in its series (2016, 2017). The
event aims at students, practitioners and researchers of Big Data.
Within the program, we offer inspiring insights into the diverse field
of Big Data by selected keynotes from international experts combined
with practical sessions, which will start off with a hackathon. >> more

a part of the ABIDA (Assessing Big Data) project, the ABIDA expert
workshop on the in-depth study “Networked Transport in the age of Big
Data” facilitated a lively exchange between experts of the various
disciplines in the mobility sector. In doing so, for Big Data as a
driving force behind the advancing networking process, the workshop was
about developing pointed position and gaining additional specialist

Hannover – 2018-06-11
From
June 11 – 15 ScaDS Dresden/Leipzig will present Big Data related
research topics at the CEBIT in Hannover. On the shared booth together
with other universities of Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia we will
be part of the TU Dresden exhibit. ScaDS Dresden/Leipzig presentations
will be accompanied with other research topics form the Center of
Informations Services and High Performance Computing (ZIH) of the TU
Dresden, the 5G Lab and the Cluster of Excellence Center for Advancing

Smart
Data Solution Center Baden-Württemberg (SDSC-BW) presents the work done
together with Echobot at the “Big-Data.AI Summit 2018”. SDSC-BW is a
long running SDIL project funded by the state ministry for research and
arts (MWK), which supports local SMEs in Baden-Württemberg in data
analytics. The goal of the presented one month long “potential analysis”
was the selection and optimal configuration of big data machine
learning algorithms that have a lasting influence on the quality of the

The
3rd BMVI Data-Run on 2nd-3rd March 2018 took place at the Federal
Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure of (BMVI) in Berlin to
discuss creative solutions to decrease emission from transport sector in
cities, by using data from different sources. The cities Bonn and
Berlin as well as Mobility Data Marketplace (MDM), Deutscher Wetter
Dienst (DWD) and Telefonica Next provided data on mobility, traffic, air
quality and weather. The Smart Data Innovation Lab (SDIL) supported
participants with its Big Data Platform and created a colorful animated
heat map that predicts the amount of money the city of Bonn can make
with traffic controls in the 24 hackathon.

presented first successful results of the BIGGR project. BIGGR combines
the KNIME analytics platform with ScaDS’ own Gradoop framework for
analysis, saving and distributed integration of large graphs to generate
information about new customers or threats. The program execution is
transparent for the user and visualizes progress and intermediate
