The First Berlin Big Data Center Symposium held in Berlin

The first Berlin Big Data Center Symposium was held on November 8th in the Smart Data Forum in Berlin. During this event, members of the BBDC presented the interim results of their research projects since the BBDC started as a BMBF funded competence center in Berlin. The president of the TU Berlin, Prof. Dr. Christian Thomsen opened the event and greeted the participants. Mentioning the importance of research in the area of big data, he encouraged the BMBF for such initiatives to support big data centers of excellence. Then Dr. Tilmann Rabl the scientific director of BBDC, Prof. Dr. Volker Markl the director of BBDC, and Prof. Dr. Klaus-Robert Müller the co-director of BBDC presented the latest research projects of the BBDC and their success stories.   >> more

The SDIL testbed keeps growing and invites more users

Karlsruhe – 2016-10-13

As fourth big data platform provider Huawei announced that they will support the Smart Data Innovation Lab with hardware and analytics software. This makes SDIL one of the largest open testbeds for Big Data Innovation in Europe with more than 900 Cores and 14 TB of main memory available for experimentation. Currently the platform already features state-of-the-art in-memory analytics solutions from SAP, IBM and Software AG based on both state-of-art proprietary and open source solutions. A new proposal process offers any German research project between academia and industry (from master thesis to research consortium) access to this unique big data platform within three weeks at no cost!   >> more

German and US researchers meet in NYC and Boston

Flink Forward

The Smart Data Forum's international roadshow in Digital Health was held in New York and Boston on Oct 10-14. Several research centers, such as Columbia Data Science Institute, NYU Center for Data Science, Google Lab and Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center were visited. As part of the delegation, BBDC researchers presented their research projects in different opportunities. Prof. Volker Markl, director of the BBDC, discussed the latest trends in big data analytics, its challenges, and some solutions at the Data Science Institute at Columbia University. Prof. Ziawasch Abedjan presented his most recent research project on data integration at AT&T labs in NY.  >> more

The second Flink Forward, a conference on Apache Flink, was held on September 12 – 14 2016 @ Kulturbrauerei Berlin. Apache Flink originates from the DFG Stratosphere Project, led by the DIMA group and supported by BBDC.  >> more

BBDC researcher at VLDB 2016

New Delhi – 2016-09-05 – 09-09

BBDC researchers attended the 42nd international conference on Very Large Data Bases (VLDB) in New Delhi, India. Dr. Tilmann Rabl presented the current status of the standardization effort of the BigBench benchmark in the Transaction Processing Performance Councils Technical Conference (TPCTC) collocated with VLDB.

Prof. Ziawasch Abedjan who was co-author of two papers "Temporal Rules Discovery for Web Data Cleaning" and " Detecting Data Errors: Where are we and what needs to be done?" presented the latter paper.

Sergey Dudoladov gave a presentation on his work on fault tolerance in the PhD workshop and Jonas Traub gave a tutorial on Apache Flink in the Workshop on Big Data Open Source Systems (BOSS), which was organized by Dr. Sebastian Schelter and Dr. Tilmann Rabl.  >> more

Germany – Excellence in Big Data Guideline

Bitkom, Smart Data Forum and Germany Trade & Invest have jointly presented the comprehensive report "Germany - Excellence in Big Data", which aims to increase Germany´s attractiveness for digital technologies. The report presents more than 30 scientific organizations, over 60 technology vendors and more than 40 Big Data users.  >> more

SAP provides real world high-dimensional masterdata for project on association rule mining

The recently completed SDIL project leveraged rule-based approaches combined with supervised machine learning to discover interesting patterns in a unique industrial data set provided by SAP within the SDIL.  >> more
