BBDC researchers at VLDB 2017

Researchers of TU Berlin’s Database Systems and Information Management (DIMA) Group recently presented their research at VLDB 2017 – the 43rd International Conference on Very Large Data Bases took place in Munich, Germany the week of August 28th through September 1st 2017. Contributions included presentations of a full paper, two workshop papers, and organizing two workshops.   >> more

Preceding the 3rd Joint International BBDC and ScaDS Summer School for Big Data, a joint hackathon sponsored by the STREAMLINE project took place from August 19th-20th in Fakultät für Mathematik of TU Munich. 38 coders from across Europe participated in the hackathon. During the two days, the participants learnt about fundamentals of building real-time data analytics pipelines based on Apache Flink and Apache Spark.   >> more

Big Data All Hands Meeting 2017 @ SDIL

KARLSRUHE – 2017-10-11

German Big Data Project presented current results in 25 interesting talks ranging from legal aspects to data analytics and from platforms to concrete use cases to over 100 participants from industry and research. The first day opened by KIT's vice president for research Prof. Oliver Kraft and ended with a tour through Big Data art at the Karlsruhe's media arts museum. The second day started with workshop organized by SDIL's Data Innovation Community meetings as part of the jointly held Smart Data Innovation Conference and concluded with two hands-on tutorials on the SDIL platform.

Apache Flink: Happenings

Apache Flink is a vital part of the new strategy for IoT, Dell Technologies announced in October 2017 alongside huge investments into real time analytics and streaming solutions. During the 3rd Flink Forward event in Berlin from 11th – 13th September over 30 companies, 41 speakers and more than 350 guests from business and research discussed the potential of Flink for the future of data analytics. The program included key notes by the senior director at Alibaba and the Chief Information Architect at ING Ops & IT Banking as well as presentations by researchers of the DIMA group and DFKI/IAM.   >> more

ScaDS Dresden/Leipzig at Supercomputing 2017

The ZIH as a ScaDS Dresden/Leipzig partner will present at the International Conference for High Performance Computing, Networking, Storage and Analysis (Supercomputing Conference, SC17) from 12 to 17 November 2017 in Denver, US. ZIH will contribute it’s Know How in HPC and data intensive computing (Big Data) in the form of talks, tutorials and discussions. Furthermore, ScaDS Dresden/Leipzig will present its research highlights alongside other research activities on the fields of performance analysis, energy efficient computing and data analytics at the ZIH conference booth (#1881).   >> more

Ideas Competition "Neue Datenräume kreativ nutzen"

Berlin Big Data Center and Smart Data Forum in collaboration with Bitkom, Gesellschaft für Informatik, Max Planck Computing & Data Facility and Technologie Stiftung Berlin are organizing an ideas competition with the title "Neue Datenräume kreativ nutzen". In the context of the annual Digital Gipfel event, this competition invites young academcis and entrepreneurs to develope drafts of innovative data analytics services, that might lead to new businesses and submit them until 15th December 2017.

Prof. Volker Markl, Director of the BBDC, elected President of the VLDB Endowment

Berlin – 2017-10-04

Prof. Volker Markl, Head of the Database Systems and Information Management (DIMA) Group at the Technische Universität Berlin and Director of the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) Intelligent Analytics for Massive Data Research Group was elected President of the VLDB Endowment. He will serve a four-year term starting in January 2018.  >> more

Big Stream Processing Systems Seminar

From October 29th – November 3rd the Big Stream Processing Systems Seminar, organized by Tilman Rabl (TU Berlin) and Sherif Sakr (KSAU – Riyadh, SA), dedicated itself to discuss the challenges of real-time processing of big streaming data. By bringing together researchers and practitioners, the seminar focused on discussing problems for a wide use of the existing systems, mainly benchmarking and high-level declarative programming abstracts of big streaming jobs.  >> more
